Is your name Bushue or Bushur?

If so, we're related! Aren't you ecstatic?

Seriously, if you are descended from either of those lines, and if you haven't seen the recent research I did on the family in France (where the name was BOURGEOIS), leave a comment here. My research takes all three names -- Bushu, Bushue, and Bushur -- back to 1686 in Montfauçon, Switzerland. And I'm more than happy to share.

BUSHUEs and BUSHUs descend from Michael Bourgeois, born in 1782, and Anna Marie Turain, 1780, who emigrated from Mertzen, France in 1827. BUSHUEs descend from the couple's second son, Myrod, and BUSHUs descend from their third son, Morand.

[Lester Bushue and Jill Boone published an updated BUSHUE family tree in the fall of 2014. It was produced just before the link to the French ancestors was locked into place so the BOURGEOIS ancestry isn't included, but if you haven't gotten a copy, leave a comment here and I'll pass your name to Jill.]

Michael Bourgeois's brother Morand, born in 1785, came to the US later than Michael, in 1833. He and his family lived in Somerset Ohio for a time before moving on to Celina, Ohio. This family goes by BUSHUR. (In 1850, Morand's oldest son Xavier, who was the only child of the nine to remain behind, emigrated to the US with his wife Theresa and their four children.)

Finally, there was another Michael Bushu who bought land with George Messer; he and his wife lived in Somerset. I don't have documentation, but it is possible that he is Michael and Morand (Srs.) uncle. I don't know if this couple had children or have any descendents.

My church and civil records include ancestors for all three families.

  1. I am related to the Bushue that settled in the Ohio and later Illinois area. I would love to see your research if you are open to sharing.

    1. Send me your email address and I'll send you links to two ancestry charts and another to a detailed paternal ancestry. I'm assuming you descend from Meinrad/Myrod (whose descendents spell the name Bushue) in which case I have nothing on the ancestry for either of his two wives. If you have a different ancestor, I may have more.

  2. I am also Bushue descendant on my mom's side...her mom's side....alot of my research was done thru the Bushue Family book that my mom has (we have the early 1990's edition)and it also looks like both my grandma's parents have Bushues....grandma's mother was a Bushue, who descended from Michael Bushue (1781 France-1833 Perry Co, OH)....his son Mirod/Myrod Bushue was married to Mary Ann (haven't been able to find a maiden name) and they had son Jonas (1826 or 1829 OH - 1898 IL) who was my grandma's great grandfather.... and her father's mother's maiden name was Bushue as well, she descended from Moran Bushue (1788 France - 1850 or 1853 Ohio) and her parents where Michael Bushue (1821 Germany? - 1911 IL) and Barbara Hook (1824 Germany? - 1905 IL), who where also mentioned in the Bushue Family book (photocopy of their 50th anniversary and Michael's obit) . Both sides ended up in the Effingham Co area of IL, but had been in Ohio before that. I've seen multiple ways of spelling Bushue. I would also like to see your research.

  3. I'm so glad to hear from you. I'd be happy to share my research.

I can answer a couple of things here. myrod's first wife was Mary Ann Moritz/Morite. I haven't traced her (too busy tracing my own elusive Mary Ann) but she's named in a couple of Holy Trinity baptisms. The name isn't that common in Somerset; with work she should be findable.

Your Moran 1788 is actually Morand 1785. He is Michael 1782s younger brother. He married Anna Clara Turain, sister of Michael's wife Anna Marie (yes, I know, 'groan') and had nine children. He emigrated from Strueth in 1833, went to Somerset for a few years and then headed to Celina, Ohio, with wife Margaret, who probably isn't Anna Clara. His oldest son, Xavier, came with his wife Theresa Walch and their four children in 1850.

These data about the American part of Moran 1785's family come from research done by Thelma and Marjorie Buschur in the 1970s. I can share those materials as well.

I'm pretty fast in responding to people. If you will provide an email address (or if you're on Facebook, we can PM), we can arrange for me to share some Dropbox files. Once I have contact information, we can delete it from this blog.

It seems all the sudden this blog, which has been up for 6-8 months, is finally doing what it was intended to do: connect family. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
